Over 550 students from 20 public and private primary and secondary schools throughout the territory marched from the Road Town Ferry Terminal to the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds on Sunday afternoon, signaling the start of the BDO Schools Football League 2012.
After the parade and line up of teams, BVI Football Association officials, along with BDO officials, Ag. Governor Inez Archibald and Premier Dr. Hon. Orlando Smith, also making remarks.

On April 24, Henry Bellingham MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office met with members of the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) and young athletes from National Federations. Ephraim Penn, president of the BVIOC and Dean Greenaway, secretary general of the BVIOC, provided the Minister with an overview of the territory’s preparations for London 2012 and of the Committee’s working relationship with Hertfordshire County Council in relation to the Games.
For the fourth consecutive year, Chef Davide Pugliese, owner of culinary retreat, Wali Nikiti on Scrub Island, took his culinary talents to the 15th annual Meals from the Masters Celebrity Chefs Brunch, Wilmington, Delaware. Chef Davide, a citizen of the British Virgin Islands, joined more than 30 chefs from around the U.S. and England to create specialty tastings for 1000 guests to help raise money for Meals on Wheels, Delaware. The fund raising event was hosted Sunday, April 22 in the atrium of the former Bank of America building in downtown Wilmington.
On Wednesday, April 18 young individual and track and field club athletes from the VI participated in a hundred meter dash to mark one hundred days to go to London 2012. The event took place in the late afternoon at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Ground and was coordinated by the BVI Olympic Committee with the cooperation of the BVI Athletics Association and chief coach, Mr Dag Samuels. LIME, who attended in support of the event, presented runners coming in first, second and third places with commemorative BVIOC London 2012 pins.
CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank presented its 2012 Unsung Heroes campaign at a press launch on Friday, April 13 at Maria’s by the Sea. The annual, community-oriented programme encourages the public to nominate individuals who dedicate their personal time without personal gain to improving the quality of life for others. Hosted by Sol at the Regatta Village, Nanny Cay, junior sailors of the Royal BVI Yacht Club (RBVIYC) raised $4000 through raffle ticket sales during the 41st BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival (BVISR) held March 26 – April 1. The raffle is the largest annual fundraising effort undertaken by the club’s junior sailors and proceeds of the ticket sales will be used to purchase equipment for the youth sailing programme.
The last day of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands ended with lighter winds but decisive racing. Thirteen sailing yachts, 96’ – 179’ in length, competed in the races March 15-17 collaboratively organized by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Boat International Media. The Wally 101, Indio, took the title from Hanuman after winning the final race on corrected time. Hanuman, a stunning J Class 138’ Royal Huisman, and winner of last year’s inaugural event, was second overall, and event newcomer, the Perini Navi built Philippe Briand designed 125’ sloop, P2 was third. The second edition of the annual racing and social event, was open to sailing yachts and motor yachts over 80 feet in length and attracted over four hundred event participants and supporters from overseas.
