Tortola, British Virgin Islands, December 15, 2009 - A week of intense tennis matches came to a close at the Tortola Sports Club last Saturday when finalists played for the division titles of the 2009 FirstCaribbean International Bank BVI Tennis Championships.

Dion Anselm, three–times winner of the men’s division of the Championships, was taken through his paces by title contender, 19 year old Deane Fonseca.  Dion ramped up his game against Deane to win 6-4, 6-2 and retain his title for the fourth consecutive year.

Earlier in the day, Carol Mitchell beat Elissa Bettcher 6-2, 6-1 to take the ladies’ division Championship title, which last year was won by newcomer, Kim Burns. In the mixed doubles, Dion Anselm and Linda Romney-Leue beat Humphrey Leue and Joanne Romney 6-0, 6-2 to hold on to their title for the second year running.
In a close match for the men’s Plate, Michael Burns narrowly defeated Atilla Takeli 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Lynn Sorretino played Claire Santillan for a comfortable win 6-1, 6-1 to take the Plate in the ladies’ division. In the mixed doubles Plate match, John Callender and Jeanette Forte beat Stan Sexton and Claire Santillan 6-4, 6-3.
This year’s junior division was represented by a core group of keen tennis players. The division was split into the under 14s and under 10s. The young participants were excited to be included again in this year's FirstCaribbean International Bank BVI Tennis Championships and played their games with zest.

Paul Oliver played a good match against Stephan Joseph to beat him 5-4, 5-3 and take the title of junior division under 14 Champion. Last year, Alexia Alleyne won the title. In the under 10s group, Verdon Baptiste beat Nina Forte 4-0 to claim his title.

“This was a particularly well-run tournament,” said Mark Chapman, president of the Tortola Sports Club and organizer of the event. “Unfortunately rain called play on a couple of days which meant Tim Robson, our professional tennis coach, had to juggle matches at the last minute. Thanks to his tireless efforts, Tim was able to accommodate all the original matches.

“Not only did we attract some new players, but we combined with FirstCaribbean to make it a fun spectator event. The $5 dinner specials and free daily door prizes were very poplular with both players and supporters alike. We’re delighted to have FirstCaribbean involved in this annual event and hope to enjoy their support again next year.”

Cherise Archer, manager, local processing center for FirstCaribbean, was present at the prize giving ceremony and handed out the awards. Addressing the floor on behalf of the bank, Ms Archer congratulated the players and organizers on the success of the event.
