Tortola, British Virgin Islands, December 21, 2009 - A team of volunteers from FirstCaribbean International Bank came together recently to help spruce up the grounds of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School in Sea Cows Bay. The efforts were undertaken as a practical component of the relationship between the bank and the school. The two institutions became linked when the bank adopted Ebenezer Thomas Primary at the beginning of the academic year as part of the government’s Adopt-a-School programme.
The volunteers met on a Saturday with Mr. Earl Forbes, president of the Ebenezer Thomas Primary PTA, and spent that morning painting planters, hoeing and weeding the vegetable plot and cutting the grass in the school grounds. The exercise was much appreciated by the school’s principal, Mrs. Sybil Hodge, who expressed her thanks on behalf of the faculty and students of the school.
“It is really wonderful how we now have access to an extra source of volunteers,” said Principal Hodge. “The work that the FirstCaribbean staff carried out has helped in improving the general appearance of our school grounds. We are particularly excited about the preparation of the vegetable patch. It is a productive area that the children enjoy being involved with and which enables our school to enter the annual inter-school produce competition.”
The Adopt-a-School programme ties in with FirstCaribbean’s internal Adopt-a-Cause initiative where the bank staff identifies a beneficiary in the community to whom it pledges volunteer support. The bank maintains regular contact with Principal Hodge to asses areas in which bank staff can lend physical assistance.
Maxim Pazos, head of corporate banking and country manager for FirstCaribbean in the BVI, commented on the bank’s future support for the Ebenezer Thomas Primary school:
“There are a variety of activities and occasions where we hope to get involved,” said Mr Pazos. “We expect to stay informed through our connection with both the school’s principal and the president of the PTA to see where we can contribute our man-power and help to enrich the community life of the school.”
The FirstCaribbean staff of The Valley, Virgin Gorda branch has engaged with the Virgin Gorda Home for the Elderly as the beneficiary of its Adopt-a-Cause programme in Virgin Gorda.
